Advance Review: Spindle by E.K. Johnston

I received a complimentary copy of this book at this years San Diego Comic-Con. I was drawn to this book because this author is also writing the Star Wars novel Ahsoka.

Spindle is a standalone novel though it is connected to the book A thousand Nights:

I fell totally in love with this book in just a few pages. It is a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.  However this book begins with Yashaa, a young boy whose family has been cast off from their home because of the curse on their land and The Rose.

It was so fascinating to be guided through this world with Yashaa and his friends. They are sent on a quest to offer their services to Prince Maram the betrothed to the princess of Kharuf. Yashaa's mother hopes that her son and his friends will be able to serve their Princess through her husband.

Yashaa however takes a deifferent path. He goes to The Rose's castle and "rescues" her. Soon the small band is trying to fight a dangerous demon and break a curse that is crippling their world. Being in The Rose's presence brings up a lot of Yashaa's anger towards her and the curse. Seeing how the curse cripples her as well, brings a new understanding to Yashaa's mind and opens his heart and loyality to the princess.

Johnston has such a lush way with language. She blends fantasy elements  with rich cultural myths. I also loved that the majority of the the cast were people of color.

Sucha wonderful read a must for fans of fairytale themed YA. This book has made me such a fan of of Johnston's, I cant wait to read more of her books.
